LARGE GROUP PERFORMANCE EVALUATION (LGPE)

The Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) is an annual assessment sponsored by the Georgia Music Educators Association in which choral ensembles are evaluated on their prepared concert performance and sight-reading skills.

At Starr’s Mill High School, ensembles participate in LGPE as part of their year-long musical development. Each ensemble prepares carefully selected repertoire that reflects its appropriate skill level, demonstrating growth in vocal technique, musical literacy, tone production, blend, intonation, and overall ensemble performance.

Performances are evaluated by a panel of adjudicators selected from an approved list of qualified music educators. In addition to the performance evaluation, each ensemble completes a separate sight-reading assessment in which students and the director are given a short piece of music at their performance level and are asked to prepare and perform it within a limited rehearsal time. This process evaluates not only reading ability, but also rehearsal strategies, musical independence, and ensemble communication.

Each ensemble receives ratings in both Performance and Sight-Reading based on state and national music standards. The rating scale is as follows:

Superior (1): Outstanding performance demonstrating the highest level of musical achievement
Excellent (2): Strong performance with minor errors
Good (3): Solid performance with noticeable areas for improvement
Fair (4): Performance with significant weaknesses
Poor (5): Limited preparation and understanding demonstrated

Preparation for LGPE is cumulative, beginning at the start of the school year and continuing through consistent rehearsal, technical development, and ensemble refinement. Participation in this event represents an important milestone in each ensemble’s yearly growth and musical achievement.
