HISTORY
1997
Starr's Mill High School opens its doors with grades 9 and 10. Under the direction of Dan Lane, the choral program is established with 80 students, including the formation of the advanced mixed ensemble, Chanticleer, a name chosen by the students themselves.
The SMHS Choral Booster Organization is founded, providing support for the growing choral program.
1998
SMHS Choirs embark on their first performance tour, participating in a choral festival aboard the USS Dolphin during a cruise to the Bahamas.
1999
SMHS Choirs make their first performance tour to New York City, singing at the historic St. Patrick's Cathedral.
The program expands to include five performing ensembles and continues its rapid growth in enrollment and student achievement.
2000
SMHS Choirs are selected to perform as a featured choir in Disney's Candlelight Processional at EPCOT, marking the program's first appearance in the renowned holiday event.
Chanticleer and the Advanced Women's Chorus participate in Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) as Class A ensembles for the first time.
2001
The Swinging Starrs show choir and Advanced Placement Music Theory are added to the choral program, expanding performance and academic opportunities for students.
SMHS Choirs return to New York City, performing at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
2002
SMHS Choral Department reaches a milestone with 33 students selected for the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) All-State Choruses.
2003
SMHS Choirs return to New York City for their third performance tour, once again performing at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
The choral program continues its tradition of excellence with 37 students selected for GMEA All-State Chorus.
2004
SMHS Choral Department records a program-best 41 students selected for GMEA All-State Choruses, highlighting the continued growth and success of the program. During the 2003–2004 school year, choral program enrollment reached 275 students.
2005
SMHS Choirs make their debut in the world-renowned Spivey Hall performing Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria with full orchestra.
SMHS Choirs selected to perform with the Disney Symphony Orchestra and Oscar winning actress Rita Moreno at the 2005 Candlelight Processional.
2006
SMHS Chanticleer is selected to perform at the 2006 Georgia Music Educators Association conference. Here Chanticleer performed the southeastern premiere of world-renowned composer James Mulholland’s first mass Missa Romantica with full orchestra with James Mulholland in attendance for the performance. At the end of the performance, Chanticleer was given one of the longest standing ovations in conference history.
2007
SMHS Chanticleer makes their first appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York selected by Carnegie Hall Conductor-In-Residence Dr. Rodney Caldwell in a performance of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem with the New England Chamber Orchestra and two other specially selected choirs.
SMHS Chanticleer makes their second appearance at the world-renowned Spivey Hall performing Gabriel Faure’s Requiem with full orchestra.
2008
SMHS choirs are selected via national audition to perform the Preludes to Evensong at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. including the world premiere of 2 choral works written especially for the Cathedral performance by nationally known composer J. Michael Dorough.
SMHS Choral Department hosts a Vocal Master Class for women’s voices led by the world-renowned opera lyric soprano Alyson Cambridge.
SMHS Choral Department has a record setting 32 students selected for GMEA all state choirs.
2009
SMHS Chanticleer performs Franz Schubert’s Mass In G with full symphony orchestra.
SMHS Choral Department hosts a Vocal Master Class for men’s choruses led by the world- renowned men’s vocal ensemble Chanticleer.
2010
SMHS Men’s Chorus Camerata is selected to perform at the 2010 Georgia Music Educators Association conference. Camerata’s performance featured Franz Beibel’s Ave Maria, the Celtic favorite Dulaman, and opera choruses from Richard Wagner’s Tannhauser and Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore.
SMHS choirs are selected via national audition for the Distinguished Visiting Choir Series at St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City, the world’s largest Gothic cathedral. Here they performed for the Sunday Eucharist service in place of the regular professional Eucharist Choir, once again presenting the world premiere of 2 more choral works written for the SMHS choir, including a choral work for the choir and the world famous Great Organ at the cathedral.
2011
The SMHS Men’s Chorus Camerata is selected to perform with the Georgia Tech Men’s Glee Club at Spivey Hall. This performance included the world premiere of the choral work for men’s chorus, Ship of State, by nationally known composer J. Michael Dorough and poet Larry Brown.
SMHS Chanticleer performs Mozart’s Requiem with the Southern Crescent Chorale and the Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra.
SMHS Choirs are selected for a third time to perform with the Disney Symphony Orchestra and Oscar-winning actress Geena Davis at the 2011 Candlelight Processional.
2012
SMHS Choral Department hosts a Vocal Master Class led by world-renowned opera mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton.
2013
SMHS Choir makes its Carnegie Hall debut solo performance in New York City, performing Rachmaninoff’s Bogoroditse Devo (Rejoice, O Virgin) in the original Russian Church Slavonic language from his 15-movement a cappella choral work All-Night Vigil.
2014
SMHS Choirs are selected for a fourth time to perform with the Disney Symphony Orchestra and Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg at the 2014 Candlelight Processional.
2017
SMHS Choir has its second solo performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City, performing Pavel Chesnokov’s Spaseniye sodelal (Salvation Is Created) in the original Russian Church Slavonic language.
2018
SMHS Choirs are selected for a fifth time to perform with the Disney Symphony Orchestra and movie and TV celebrity John Stamos at the 2018 Candlelight Processional.
2019
SMHS Chanticleer is selected to perform as the guest choir for the Southern Crescent Chorale and Orchestra’s annual Christmas concert.
2021
SMHS Choirs are selected to be the featured choir at the 2nd Annual Fayette County 9/11 Tribute at Center City Park.
2025
SMHS Choirs make their debut in the world-renowned Spivey Hall performing Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria with full orchestra.
SMHS Choirs are selected for the second time to perform with the Disney Symphony Orchestra and Oscar winning actress Rita Moreno at the 2005 Candlelight Processional.
2026
The SMHS Choirs are selected for the sixth time to perform with the Disney Symphony Orchestra and the Voices of Liberty during the 2026 Disney Candlelight Processional at EPCOT.
GENERAL ACCOLADES

For 16 years, from 2004-2019, SMHS Chanticleer was the featured performing choir with the professional symphonic band Tara Winds, who have toured throughout the United States, including performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City, as well as, performances at prestigious musical festivals in Europe. Chanticleer would perform individual choral works, as well as, combined works with the Tara Winds.

For over 20 consecutive years, SMHS’s Chanticleer received SUPERIOR ratings in sight singing and performance at Georgia’s Large Group Performance Evaluations. The choir continues this tradition in 2026. During the same period, Camerata, Bella Voce and Bel Canto received SUPERIOR and EXCELLENT ratings in sight singing and performance at Large Group Performance Evaluations.

Between 2004 and 2018, the SMHS Choral Department had 15 students selected for the prestigious Governors Honor Program as vocal majors.

Between 2005 and 2019, the SMHS Choral Department had 22 six year all state choral students.
